Chicks hatching in Mr Owens' 2nd class
There was great excitement in Mr Owens' 2nd class this week as we welcomed new members to the class! On Monday our special eggs had been inside an incubator for the last 19 days at 37 degrees celsius. We learnt how a chicken takes 21 days inside in an incubator to hatch out. On Tuesday it was day 20 and the eggs still just looked like normal eggs, until around 2 o'clock on Tuesday when we saw little cracks on 3 of the eggs. The picture below shows this.
On day 21, Wednesday morning, when we came in to school these 3 eggs were now 3 healthy chickens.
During the day we had more chickens hatching out.
The chickens are now in their new home with a lamp to keep them warm, lots of food and water, and a nice cosy bed. They will stay with us for the next week or so and we shall see how they grow in this space of time.
A huge word of thanks to Spring Grove Farm Ltd who supplied us with our wonderful special eggs.
Below is a few pictures/videos of the chickens.

Seachtain na Gaeilge
As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, Mr Owens' 2nd class performed Irish dancing during the Seachtain na Gaeilge show.
We must say a special thanks to their dance teacher Niamh Marie.
As you can see from the video below, they were very well prepared and performed fantastically.
(If problems viewing the video, please view on a computer/laptop - not an ipad/tablet)

What is up with room 16?
Room 16 has been somewhat magical around Christmas time; with elves spotted around the place over the last few years! This December has seen our friends return.........
We have been seeing clues over the last few days that there might be elves in our classroom; however we had no proof of this. So we decided to set up a secret camera to see what was going on!
We have been seeing clues over the last few days that there might be elves in our classroom; however we had no proof of this. So we decided to set up a secret camera to see what was going on!
The camera was set up on Tuesday afternoon and when we checked it Wednesday morning we were amazed. To our delight we captured elves leaving us a note.
We re-positioned the camera in a new spot in the classroom to see if we could capture the elves again. Thursday morning we found more elves when we examined the camera footage.
Below is a picture of the note the elves left us; and the two videos that we captured.

Christmas Shoe Box Appeal in Mr Owens' 2nd class
Here in Mr Owens' 2nd class we completed the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal whereby we gave lovely gifts to children in poorer countries that wouldn't otherwise receive any Christmas presents.
It is an initiative that has touched the hearts of many and one I feel is very special.
There are many videos online of children receiving their shoe box presents and to say that these videos are moving and overwhelming is an understatement.
Once we wrapped the shoe boxes with Christmas wrapping paper we brought in items to fill our shoe boxes.
Examples of things that we put into our boxes included: toys, pencils, pens, colouring books, a small doll, a picture of ourselves, sweets, and sanitation items.
Thank you to all the parents/guardians that helped with this appeal.
The videos of children receiving their presents and more information can be found at:
